The last Underworld film, blood wars underworld, was released in 2016. It was a critical and commercial disappointment, grossing $159 million on a $35 million budget. However, it did well enough to warrant a sequel. In May 2019, it was announced that Len Wiseman would return to the franchise to direct underworld 6. Wiseman directed the first two Underworld films.

Except for the news of the new underworld series, there is another rumor about Selene. The first two movies in the franchise saw Kate Beckinsale play the role of Selene, a vampire warrior who fights against werewolves. But now there are rumors that this role is likely to change shortly. However, Kate Beckinsale has said that she is not interested in returning for a third film. This means that the role of Selene will likely be recast.
